  • Negative traits of mercury include tendency to be critical, sarcastic, argumentative, and sly.  As well as lying, being deceitful, and criminal activity such as fraud, swindling, and forgery. (Woolfolk #241)
I want to go a little more into negative behavior because I do not think these books and sites explain Mercury enough when it comes to bad or dangerous behavior.  Since we live in an age of technology I believe Mercury’s influence is seen with greater force.  Mercury is constantly a presence in our lives, the good and the bad.  We know that there are many scammers on the internet trying to swindle people out of money or trying to persuade them to join or do things that they may not have ever considered before.  This is the negative trait of Mercury.  The only way to prevent others from harming us is to use our own knowledge and understanding to educate ourselves on what is right or wrong, good or bad.  In this new age we see how so many people are influenced by those who seek power and influence.  Be sure to acknowledge your own Mercury capabilities and seek your own intelligence on any matter.  That way any decisions you make will be based on your own choice and not by another's tricky.

They say that mercury’s expression comes to us through film, television and radio.  Well that is not all.  Our communication can be seen in so many other forms of art.  From paintings to computer designed websites.  Anything that is an expression of one’s mind comes from the planet Mercury.

  • Quick wit, quick thinking, possibilities, opinions, reasoning and the ability to rationalize things. (Horoscope.com, Inc)
It is important to understand that this trait will come out and developed in the house where mercury is located in your natal chart.  The natal chart must include the time of birth as well as location to know the correct house placement.  If you do not have a natal chart or would like to know more about natal charts please check out the section on natal charts.  If you do have your natal chart and know the house mercury is located in then check out the section on houses to get a better understanding of where this trait will be emphasized.
  • Energizing
  • Mercury prompts us to move from one thing to the next and to get answers on both a physical and psychological level. (Horoscope.com, Inc)
Physical communication is just as important as the psychological.  Feelings is our body's way of communicating with our mind to let us know if we are safe or if we are scared. What we feel may need to be communicated verbally to others to allow others to understand us, as well as protect us from the dangers that seek to hurt us.  To do that we must understand ourselves mentally and emotionally.  This is such a bigger subject than these brief little bullet points and not many sites or books that I have read have ever gone into more detail about this particular subject. When one feels love, that emotion comes from the planet Venus, but the knowledge of that feeling comes from the planet mercury.   Without mercury we may never be able to express the feeling of love that we have for one another.  The same is true for our anger.  I believe that this very subject is key during any of the retrograde periods.  It brings out those things that we may not know or understand within ourselves during the retrograde periods. Forcing one's own mental and emotional areas to express what is really at the core of ourselves is the key to better understanding ourselves.  Please check out the section on retrogrades for more information on mercury retrogrades.
  • Mercury is about our day to day activities and environments and places we travel within on those days.
  • Speaking, writing, and any forms of communication and learning. (Horoscope.com, Inc)
This is so generic.  There are so many forms of communication.  Just a simple hug is a way to express to someone that you care about them.  That is a form of communication.  It may be simple but sometimes it communicates more than any word can do.  So do not mistake Mercury for just our voice or even our mind.  Mercury is about communicating what we know about ourselves.  That knowledge we have gained within us already and it is mercury that helps us express and share that with others.

  • Challenging communication during retrograde periods.  This includes all forms of communication from kissing one's cheek to sharing one’s ideas in technology.

Understanding Mercury allows one to understand the parts of themselves that are functioning in a particular area in their life.  This Planet is all about communications and all forms of communication, especially technology.  I am surprised at how little many sites miss this form of communication.  The placement of Mercury in one's natal chart emphasizes Mercury traits in that area.   To better understand the area’s of life please check out the section on houses.  If you already have had your natal chart done with the exact time of and location of birth, you will want to locate the house that mercury is in and focus on reading about that particular house.  Once you understand the house location, you will begin to understand how Mercury plays a major role in that particular house. 

I just want to say that Mercury may be one of the most important planets.  Mercury allows us the ability to understand our own self within and then gives us the opportunity to share that knowledge with others.  Yes, knowing ourselves allows us to know others a little better and Mercury gives us that opportunity to find those who we can relate to, but it also allows us to try and understand others that are not like us.  That is the most amazing part of mercury, but can also be the way mercury plays games with those he thinks he knows.  So please be careful and understand that our strength in our own knowledge is through Mercury.  The stronger we are in this area the safer we are from those who may try to harm us.

  • What you use when you have a conversation, exchange a glance or gesture, or interpret symbol
  • Represents the side of you living totally in the present
  • Never stops collecting data
  • In the body, also acts as a messenger
  • Transmits messages through his function as the central nervous system, which lets your eyes and hands collaborate, your eyes blink, and your breathing continue
